How to find people using the internet

Is it as simple as getting a subscription to 192.com? Or is there more to tracing than just accessing popular databases?

Well for starters, the electoral roll has got to be the starting point of any trace. However if the person you are tracing has a common name like John Smith then the electoral roll will not help you very much. There will be too many entries in there.

Any investigations needs a beginning. In people tracing, the information that we get from our clients will make or break the trace.

The more information the better, name, last known address, date of birth, name of father and mother, their addresses (if known). The professional people finder can cross reference these details to narrow the search to the “John Smith” that you are looking for.

Most tracing agencies have access to a lot of databases that the general public would find too expensive to subscribe to, but more importantly they have the experience and the drive to look in the right place for the information that is required.

Tracing a 12 year boy for his estranged father

Last year I was involved in a trace and subsequent service of a court order on the mother of a 12 year old boy. The mother had broken off all contact with the father after their difficult breakup and decided to lose themselves in the bustle of the big city (London).

The instructing Solicitors had previously served the mother with a court order for contact but the mother promptly moved house and ignored the court order. They then came to me to trace them in order to serve another Order.

After some exhaustive tracing, I managed to locate the mother at her new boyfriends mothers house and even located the school that the boy attended. Although I caught glimpses of her at the address, I was never able to serve her personally. In the end the court order service via letter boxing and I did so and went on to the next job.

Last week, I received further instructions from the Solicitor to serve the mother yet again with another court order and the Judge in the case had ordered that the serve be letter boxed.

I decided that I would see if the mother still lived there (I suspected that she did not) and low and behold, she had moved yet again.

It gave me immense satisfaction to serve her personally this time as well as the letter box serve. The mothers face was a picture to behold because she couldn’t believe that it was possible to find her.

Tracing a bad mannered freelance marketeer

I came online today (Sunday) after a weekend hard at work (working undercover for one of the most famous department stores in London) and found people talking about me.

The only information was a name, which turned out to be incorrect or perhaps false, an email address and a couple of mobile numbers.

After looking for the address based on the name without success, I started to play around with the mobile numbers. Of course, I rang them first to test if they were still in existance. The old number was constantly engaged and the new one went unanswered.

I had explained to the client that obtaining an address from the mobile number is usually illegal due to the Data Protection Act. However the number had been published on a website which had an address as well. From that I was able to cross reference that address to my databases and came up with the guys real name and his partners contact numbers. My client was then able to have a conversation with him.

The client then said the following nice things about me;

“I was recently let down by a freelance telemarketer who ‘disappeared’ and would not reply to calls or e-mails. Whilst he had not been paid so that I was not out of money, he had my information and I did not know who he had called on behalf of my company - which meant that either I would not follow through on commitments made to them on behalf of the company or I would end up calling them again and look really bad. Salgado within minutes of getting what little data I had tracked him down via his partners online business allowing me to track him down via the website number. And all of this was on a Sunday, as well.

This was wonderful service. I was seriously annoyed at being treated in this way, and somewhat frustrated by my inability to do anything about it. I now know where he got with the campaign and can take over from there and have the satisfaction if being able to demonstrate that I take customer care and my business’ reputation very seriously.

So thank you Salgado Investigations!”

Tracing: My good deed for the week

I just did a tracing job (Pro-bono) for an OAP who was receivng what she called pornographic material through the post.

Inspite of writing a letter to the PO POX address, the material was still coming through her letterbox. From the PO Box i was able to find out the name of the company who are a legitimate direct marketing company in kent.

I was able to talk to one of the directors who was very apologetic and promised to take their names of his database.

Louise from PlainText publishes article in the Observer

Well done to Louise from PlainText who has recently had an article published in the distinguised Observer. She talks about the newish tactics employed by Debt Collection agencies in sending out texts to the debtors without making clear who they are. A shady practise frowned upon by the OFT.

She also points out that the tracing done by these agencies all too often end up with an old address. I would imagine that there is no tracing done at all other than to check the electoral roll. These companies often deal in bulk tracing and can not afford to do indepth tracing.

If people wanted an indepth tracing service, they would be best adviced to approach private detectives.
