SOUTHAMPTON

Locatedin the county of Hampshire, Southampton is the largest city on the south coast.

Souhampton is a port and one of the largest commercial ports in the UK. It is very close to the new forest and sits halfway between Portsmouth and Bournemouth.

It is known that Stone age, Bronze age and Iron Age communities existed in the Southampton area, the first real settlement occured in AD 43 when the Romans established a trading port servicing Salisbury and Winchester.

Also known as the Gateway to the Empire, Southampton became a mayor ship building focus for the industry and the RMH Titanic sailed from Southampton in 1912 as did the Mayflkower in 1620.

Southampton has the distinction of having invented and manufactored the 2nd World War fighter aircraft The Submariner Spitfire.
